Breath Body Balance

BREATH…BODY…BALANCE (A COMBINATION OF YOGA & QIGONG)

Breath, Body, Balance is designed for people who are chair-bound or have difficulty standing for any period of time. While Yoga is very well-known, Qigong has been given less attention in the west. Qigong is an ancient, practice that has been used in China in order to achieve and maintain optimal health at any age. Consistent practice over time will help these people feel greater ease and comfort, and also help them to view their lives with a greater sense of peace and joy.

The gentle movements of Qigong enhance the body at a subtle, cellular and organic level. Qigong is the physical expression of Chinese cosmology—the balance of Yang and Yin—two complimentary opposite energies. Simply put, the Chinese teach us that we are in a state of health when these two energies (Chi) are in balance and harmony with one another. Dis-ease is manifested when the energies are out of balance.

BREATHE…
All practices begin with breath work. Our breath directs and guides the flow of Chi. This fills and stimulates the lungs, expands the chest and torso, and improves oxygenation. At the same time, the breathing practices stimulate the flow of Chi throughout the body.
LOOSEN…
Gentle torso loosening exercises are added to the routine. Arms, legs, and torso are loosened at a gentle pace and with attention to the capability levels of the participants. These exercises can be performed either sitting or standing.

STRETCH…
After the breath and energy are flowing and the muscles and joints are loosened, soft stretches will quietly work the muscles and tendons. Again, all of these exercises can be performed either sitting or standing.
MEDITATE…
We finish the workshop with several minutes of sitting quietly, using visualization and relaxation to enhance the sense of calm and well-being.
